the syrian civil war started back in 2011, during the whole arab spring thing where people across the middle east were rising up against corrupt regimes.
in syria, people were already pissed at assad's government.. due to years of repression, poverty, zero political freedom..
and then it all exploded when some kids in daraa got arrested and tortured just for spraying anti-gov graffiti. yea. literal kids.
instead of listening or backing off, the state just cracked down harder, shot at protests, jailed people.
and surprise surprise, it only made more people angry. what started as peaceful protests turned into a full blown uprising.
eventually, different opposition groups started forming.. some were regular people who wanted democracy, others were more religious or militant. the state tried to paint all of them as terrorists.
then it all spiral-ed. jihadist groups like isis were formed, which made everything worse, and foreign powers jumped in like dogs.
the united states, russia, iran, turkey, the gulf states.. all backing different sides, not because they care about syrians, but because they wanted influence or control.
but, like always.
who suffered the most?
normal syrians.
hundreds of thousands dead, millions had to flee their homes. so many families ripped apart, so many people just trying to survive while these global powers treat syria like a chessboard.
and yea, there’ve been some ‘peace talks’ here and there, but nothing real has changed.
syria's still a mess, assad’s still in power, and the world mostly moved on.
its just heartbreaking. all these lives destroyed because of a brutal regime and the imperialist greed that kept feeding the fire.
naturally, the syrian civil, i.e, still ongoing to this day has produced some shocking footage of war crime depravities.
one of the most well known examples would be the infamous Syrian Bayonet video.
the video itself is believed to have been released in january of 2015.
the clip is around 3 minutes in length and shows a torture of an elderly man who’s completely unarmed. this torture is perpetuated by the soldiers belonging to the syrian army.
the clip is very blurry and sound is kind of muffled and distorted which in a strange may adds to its eerie-ly scary nature.
as you play the video, you can see that the setting is that of an abandoned building filled with rubble.
you see an older man who has clearly been beaten prior to recording and has been gagged with what looks to be duct tape.
a man with some kind of AK variant with a bayonet fitted on it can be seen interrogating the captive, and while answering, you can hear the man's gag.
the gag obviously makes him sound muffled, which makes the interrogation useless. i think the interrogation was carried out to mock the victim, knowing he couldn't
answer.
around 30 seconds into the video,
as the captive mumbles while speaking, the man with the AK then pushes the bayonet into the man's cheek;
it echoes through the room.
instinctively, the victim then holds his face before the man with the bayonet fitted AK then stands bayonet down into the crown of his head and drives the bayonet into the crown of his head three times.
on the third time, the bayonet gets stuck in the man's skull, and the executioner struggles to pull it out.. though eventually he does.
the victim makes sounds that can only be described as wailing, which gets louder and louder after each time his head is penetrated with the bayonet.
the poor victim is then hit three more times with the bayonet once again on the top of his head.
the bayonet is penetrating the skull but seemingly not deep enough to severe the brain.
the man’s groans and wails turn even more violent after each strike, which is very hard to listen to.
a second man, who i assume is the person filming the act, then appears to try to cut the victim's throat with a small knife but isnt able to, which causes the victim to freak out.
the person then backs away after failing to cut him. now, the victim's been resting against
the wall and he tries to move slightly.
you can see the wall has been stained with
blood where his head was resting. he tries
to plead for his life by holding his hand
out, as if trying to tell them to stop,
though this obviously doesn't work.
the man with the ak-bayonet then hits the victim's face, hands, and chest.
the scene is getting bloodier and bloodier and the man is still alive.
however, now the guy starts stabbing the victim with the bayonet, which was fitted on his AK, and then he jams the bayonet into the man's ear, causing the victim to let out a horrible shriek.
then completely stops screaming when the killer pulls the bayonet out.
the killer then stabs the victim in the head hard two to three more times, and it appears that the victim has finally passed away at the end of the video.
the person filming then turns the camera around and he speaks in the camera for a few seconds before both men leave the scene. the video ends here.
well, due to the quality of the clip at times, its hard to fully understand whats going on, which makes it hard to explain..
though what you see and hear is utterly horrific.
the acts of depravity performed in this video are ones that i won't forget quickly
